Gabriela Lena Frank
Gabriela Lena Frank (* 1972 in Berkeley , California ) is an American composer and pianist.
Life
Gabriela Lena Frank attended Berkeley High School and studied at Rice University and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Her composition teachers were William Albright , Leslie Bassett , William Bolcom , Michael Daugherty and Samuel Jones , her piano teachers Jeanne Kierman Fischer and Logan Skelton .
Her Three Latin American Dances were premiered in 2004 by the Utah Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Keith Lockhart and recorded in 2006. Robert Gardner sang her songs Songs of Cifar and The Sweet Sea at Carnegie Hall in 2004, accompanied by Molly Morkowski . In the same year Leone Buyse played the world premiere of her tone poem for flute and orchestra Illapa with the Shepherd Symphony Orchestra . In the following year the world premieres of Manchay Tiempo by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra , Inkarrí by the Kronos Quartet , Ghosts in the Dream Machine by the Chiara Quartet with the pianist Simone Dinnerstein and her flute concerto by the Orquestra Sinfonica da Bahía and the flutist Lucas Robatto took place in Brazil instead.
Frank's participation in the Latina Letters Conference in San Antonio led to the collaboration with the South American poets Lorna Dee Cervantes , Trinidad Sánchez, Jr. and Pat Mora . In 2009 she received a Guggenheim grant , and with the Inca Danzas she won the Latin Grammy Award for best contemporary classical composition.
As a pianist, Frank recorded the complete works for piano solo and piano and violin by Leslie Bassett and played the world premiere of works dedicated to her by Evan Chambers , Richard Lavender and Andrew Meads . With the ethnomusicologist Raul Romero , she compiled a collection of recordings of piano works by indigenous composers from Peru.
