Gabriele Laureani

Gabriele Laureani (born September 14, 1788 in Rome , † October 14, 1849 there ) was an Italian clergyman, librarian and archivist .

Life

He was the son of the doctor Francesco Antonio Laureani from Nicotera and his wife Rosa Antonini. Gabriele Laureani studied at the Roman seminary. After his ordination he became professor of Greek literature and rhetoric at the Collegio Romano . He was also a member of the Accademia dell'Arcadia under the shepherd's name Filandro Geronteo in 1820 and its custodian general in 1828. Pope Gregory XVI appointed him on October 19, 1831 second and on February 12, 1838 first custodian of the Vatican Library and in 1838 awarded him the title of Papal House Prelate . On November 22, 1843, Gabriele Laureani became consultor of the Index Congregation and on February 2, 1844, canon of St. Peter in the Vatican . Pope Pius IX appointed him on May 13, 1848 a member of the High Council ( Alto Consiglio ) , the upper house of the Papal States . In 1849, Gabriele Laureani refused to take the oath of the Roman Republic on the grounds that the Vatican Library belonged to the Pope as Bishop of Rome and not as head of the Papal States .

Merits

Gabriele Laureani acquired the literary estate of the archaeologist Francesco Cancellieri (1751–1826) for the Vatican Library in April 1840 .
