Gabrielle Robinne (born July 1, 1886 in Montluçon , † December 18, 1980 in Saint-Cloud ) was a French theater and film actress . She is considered the first big star of the French silent film .

Life

As a member of the Comédie-Française , Gabrielle Anna Charlotte Robinne shot L'Assassinat du duc de Guise in 1908, her first significant silent film. Robinne became one of the first stars of French cinema not only because of her beauty, but also because of her enormous acting potential. Even before the First World War, she shot numerous dramas under René Leprince , in which she was mostly admired as a vamp in sophisticated roles. After the film Lucile (1923) she disappeared from the big screen and did not return until 1935 in Les Deux couverts . Directed by Marcel L'Herbier , she shot some popular costume dramas towards the end of the 1930s. Her last appearance was in 1973 in Le Journal d'un suicide . In her hometown of Montluçon, a theater is named in honor of Gabrielle Robinne.
