Gabrielle Vincent

Monique Martin , known by the pseudonym: Gabrielle Vincent , (born September 9, 1928 in Brussels ; † September 24, 2000 there ) was a Belgian artist , children's book author and illustrator .

Life

Martin was born on September 19, 1928 in Brussels. After completing her studies at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1951 , the Duculot publishing house published the children's book Ernest et Célestine ont perdu Siméon under the pseudonym "Gabrielle Vincent" . The book became an international success. In the following years, Ernest et Célestine produced 26 volumes , which were translated into several languages ​​and received many prizes. In Germany, the books were first translated by Rolf Inhauser as Mimi and Brumm, later as Ernest and Celestine (by Sophia Sonntag or Christel Rech-Simon and Heidi Varin). That is why Martin is known to many by her pseudonym. She created and illustrated other children's books, some of which appeared under the pseudonym and some under her real name. In addition to her work as a writer, she painted her pictures, which are not used as illustrations in children's books. Monique Martin died on September 24, 2000.

In 2012 her godson Benoit Attout founded the Fondation Monique Martin , which manages her work. In the same year, the animated film Ernest & Célestine was released . The filmmakers managed to live up to the spirit and style of Gabrielle Vincent's books.
