biography

Childhood and youth

Gaby Jouval was the daughter of Gabriele (1860–1930) and Caroline, b. Soeneaux (1860-1917). The father worked as an authorized signatory in a paper shop . She had two sisters, one stayed in Paris during her adult life and the other immigrated to America ( USA or Montevideo ). After attending a girls' boarding school in Paris, Gaby Jouval switched to the trade school. This was followed by an apprenticeship as a milliner. She then went to Munich in 1913 to learn German. She worked there in a well-known hat salon and has already attracted international fashion professionals.

Branch in Zurich

Jouval was poached in Munich by a Zurich hat manufacturer and therefore went to Zurich in 1915 from March 15 to September 1 and from October 12 to November 26 and stayed with the milliner and entrepreneur Claire Bouissou (1872–1933) at Beethovenstrasse 11. She lived with a Mrs. Kopp at Lavaterstrasse 69 from 1916 to 1924. After moving twice, she lived with Thekla Nievergelt at Gotthardstrasse 64 from August 15, 1925 to March 31, 1931. From April 1, 1931 she lived in her own apartment with a housekeeper (maid). It was a noble three-room apartment for the time at Alfred-Escher-Strasse 27.

Gaby Jouval initially worked for the Bliss company in Zurich and shortly thereafter, from February 1916, worked for the owner Claire Bouissou's Haute Couture Maison Claire . She designed models of haute couture and designed hats. She was promoted to operations manager and invested a lot of her own capital in the company. In August 1930 Gaby Jouval opened her own haute couture shop in competition with Claire Bouissou's existing shop at Gartenstrasse 33 in Zurich. Her long-time friend, the merchant and painter Wilhelm "Willy" Gottfried Schuppisser, helped her with this entrepreneurial step . It employed around 70 to 80 people. She took over most of the employees and a large part of the clientele from Maison Claire . The former employer Claire Bouissou died on March 23, 1933 after a short illness; the Maison Claire was subsequently dissolved.

Her clientele included wealthy personalities from Switzerland and abroad. It was quite common for some customers from abroad to fly to Zurich to shop with her. Conversely, Gaby Jouval often traveled to customers abroad so that they could try on their new designs. When orders were placed, she had them produced under high pressure and her employees work overtime, even though she did not have a permit. She was fined seven times for this between 1930 and 1933.

Naturalization, Marriage and Death

In September 1933 Gaby Jouval applied for naturalization and eventually became Swiss. In 1939 she had a villa on Mythenquai remodeled according to her wishes by the architect Karl Egender . On October 20, 1940, she married her long-time friend Willy Schuppisser, whom she had met about 25 years earlier. It was Willy Schuppisser's second marriage. Her husband handled the business and maintained relationships with her customers. She was also able to sell her models abroad, such as Sweden or the United States . On December 28, 1943, she presented the spring models at the Hotel Palace in St. Moritz . A few days later, Gaby Jouval suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and was taken to the hospital. She fell into a coma and died of the consequences on June 26, 1946 in Zurich. Her husband continued to run the business for a few years and gave up in the 1950s.
