Gaetano Abela

Gaetano Abela (born January 24, 1778 in Syracuse , † December 30, 1826 in Castellammare del Golfo ) was a leading member of the secret society of the Carbonari and fought for the independence of Sicily . He was the father of the composer Placido Abela .

Life

Gaetano Abela was the son of Giuseppe Abela, the 6th Baron of Camelio, and his wife Concetta from the noble family La Torre. In 1795 he volunteered in the third battalion stationed in Girgenti . In 1798 he went to Malta and was knighted there. After the conquest of Malta by Napoleon , he joined the French army. In Calais he joined the Freemasons . He distinguished himself in the military conquest of Naples and achieved the rank of Colonel of the Cuirassiers . In 1812 he resigned from the Napoleonic army. He tried to get into the service of Joachim Murat . During this time he joined the Carbonari .

In 1814 he married in Naples. His wife died shortly after giving birth to his son, whom he named Joseph Hilarion . He left little Joseph with his in-laws. In 1817 Gaetano Abela went back to Sicily. On December 21, 1818, he and his brother were arrested after they were denounced . First they were imprisoned in the Syracuse castle. In March 1819 Gaetano was transferred to Castel Sant'Elmo , Naples. During the revolution of July 1820 he was liberated and returned to Sicily. In Palermo he took part in campaigns for the independence of Sicily. With the signing of the surrender of Termini Imerese on September 22, 1820, the nobility came to terms with the return of the Bourbons. Abela did not follow this change of direction. He was arrested again on October 28, 1820. After imprisonment in Palermo and Messina, several escape attempts and a lengthy trial, he was sentenced to death and executed on December 30, 1826 in Castellamare del Golfo .

His son Joseph Hilarion entered the Benedictine order and was given the name Placido.
