Placido Abela

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Placido Abela (bourgeois Joseph-Hilarion Abela ; * 1814 in Naples ; † July 6, 1876 in Montecassino ) was an Italian organist , composer of church music and prior of the Benedictine monastery of Montecassino .

Life

Placido Abela's father was the freedom fighter Gaetano Abela . He came from a noble, Sicilian family who originally lived in Spain. Gaetano's wife was from Naples and died giving birth to their son, Joseph Hilarion. His in-laws took care of the child after he returned to Sicily. Joseph Hilarion showed great musical talent. He received music lessons at the Real Collegio di Musica in the convent of San Sebastiano. In 1826 the college moved into its current seat in the former convent of San Pietro a Maiella and was renamed the Reale Conservatorio di Musica di San Pietro a Majella . Here Pietro Casella taught him. After the death of his father, the King of Naples sent him to the Collegio de Maddaloni at the age of thirteen . Here he continued to receive music and piano lessons.

At the age of 16 he received royal permission to join the Benedictines in Montecassino. He was given the first name Placido, with which he became known. In 1835 he took his religious vows. He became organist at the church of Montecassino and learned composition in self-study. In 1851 the music and composition teacher Giovanni Battista de Vecchis stayed in Montecassino to teach music to seminarians and students. Abela also received lessons in composition and counterpoint from him. After de Vecchis' departure, Abela continued his self-study with the help of books. He received further composition lessons from Filippo Hercolani, a student of Niccolò Zingarelli , who had settled in San Germano, today's Cassino (Latium) . In the meantime Placido had become prior of the monastery.
