Gagarin - Space Race ( Russian Гагарин. Первый в космосе ) is a Russian feature film from 2013.

action

The film begins on the evening of April 11, 1961, the eve of the first manned space flight with Vostok 1 . The chief designer Sergei Korolev visits the rocket launch pad, which is still being worked on. Then he looks after the two cosmonauts Juri Gagarin and German Titow , who are lying in their beds and cannot sleep because of their excitement. The next morning Gagarin and Titov do gymnastics. Gagarin plays with the dog Strelka , who has already been in space. Titov is jealous because he is only intended as a substitute and the glory of the first person in the cosmos will only fall to Gagarin. The cosmonauts are brought to the rocket. Gagarin takes his place in the capsule, which is then sealed. However, due to an error, it has to be opened and closed again. The start is going according to plan, the flight is good for the time being. The first secretary of the CPSU Central Committee, Khrushchev , orders Lieutenant Gagarin to be promoted to major. When returning to Earth orbit, the angle of incidence is too shallow, so Gagarin has to activate manual controls. The device part of the spaceship does not detach from the landing capsule as intended, but is blown off when it enters the earth's atmosphere . Gagarin lands by parachute. A peasant woman and her daughter flee in horror from the creature who has fallen from heaven. criticism

The Daily Telegraph criticized the film for completely ignoring the rest of Gagarin's life and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death.
