Gaikai (from Japanese 外海 , German: open sea ) is an American IT company specializing in streaming technologies for computer games . The company's services and products are mainly used to enable a separation between the calculation and the use of computer games. Games are run on one device and only the image and sound output is output via an Internet or network connection on an end device ( cloud gaming ). Corresponding games can thus be used from high-performance game hardware, regardless of location, even on end devices that have lower computing power or inadequate hardware in comparison. Alongside OnLive, Gaikai is one of the leading providers in this area . Since July 2, 2012, the company has been part of the Sony group, which uses Gaikai's technology primarily to expand the range of its PlayStation product family.

Company history

Gaikai was founded in November 2008 by Andrew Gault and Rui Pereira. In April 2009, game designer David Perry took a stake in the company, who had previously represented and introduced Gaikai as a speaker at specialist computer game events (including GDC 2009 ). Perry assumed the post of CEO of the company. The startup received funding from investors such as Intel Capital , Limelight Networks , Rustic Canyon Partners, Benchmark Capital , TriplePoint Capital, NEA and Qualcomm . In June 2012, Korean electronics company Samsung announced that it would integrate Gaikai's streaming service into its televisions. On July 2, 2012, the Japanese electronics company Sony announced that it was taking over Gaikai for the equivalent of around 380 million US dollars. As part of the unveiling of Sony's PlayStation 4 game console on February 20, 2013, Perry announced that Gaikai was an important part of the associated services. For example, unlike its predecessors, the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 , the console will not have any downward hardware compatibility with the previous console version. Instead, the games of all previous PlayStation generations are to be made available with the help of Gaikai's streaming technology. In addition, Gaikai's technology should also be used for streaming demo versions and the remote play function for PS4 games on the PlayStation Vita handheld console . The service for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita is called "PlayStation Now" and will not only be available on Sony consoles. TVs, PCs, tablets and smartphones are also supported.

Business model

Gaikai provides streaming services for computer games. For this purpose, the company operates server farms, which take over the execution and calculation of the games. The result is then sent as a stream over the Internet to any receiving device. This allows games to be played on a variety of platforms such as cell phones, televisions, tablets, and the like that may otherwise not qualify for the programs to run. The installation of specially adapted software is not absolutely necessary for this. In addition to streaming complete games, Gaikai's technology is also used, for example, for the installation-free provision of program demos for advertising purposes on websites.

Gaikai has partnerships with leading companies in the information technology and computer games sectors , including Autodesk , Capcom , Electronic Arts , Gamesload , Intel , LG Electronics , nVidia , Ubisoft , Walmart , Warner Bros. and YouTube .
