Galåbodarna (also Västra Galåbodarna ) is a mountain pasture settlement at the foot of Oviksfjäll in Jämtland , Sweden . Galå is borrowed from the name of the river Galån , which flows from Oviksfjällen below the village of Börtnan into the Ljungan . The Swedish word Bodarna is the specific plural of the word bod and denotes an alpine pasture or in the plural an alpine settlement, which can consist of up to 30 huts. Today Galåbodarna consists of three alpine meadows with a total of 21 well-preserved dairy huts. The Länsstyrelsen Jämtland (county council of Jämtland) classified Galåbodarna as extremely valuable from a cultural and historical point of view.

There is a smaller alpine settlement called Östra Galåbodarna, 10 km further downstream near Galån.

The alpine meadows of Galåbodarna are right at the crossroads of Fäbodvägen from Börtnan to Persåsen and the road to Arådalen and Glen . The dairy huts were built in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries by farmers from Oviken and Myssjö , who let their cows graze on the mountain meadows during the summer months. The alpine pastures were managed until the 1980s. Since the 1960s and 1970s, some holiday homes have been built near the alpine meadows, which are privately owned by the residents of the surrounding villages. From 2004, several log houses based on the traditional construction of the dairy huts were built near the alpine pasture at Galå Fjällgård . Hikers and tourists have been able to stay overnight here since 2006.

From the alpine settlement there is a good view of nearby Oviksfjäll , which can be reached quickly via the 15 km long road to Arådalen. The pastures themselves are located in the middle of original taiga spruce forests and extensive moors . To the north, after a few kilometers, there is Arådalen's nature reserve , which is partly part of the Europe-wide Natura 2000 network. Species-rich moorland, the original taiga spruce forest and the adjacent mountain birch forest are protected here. Here include lynx , wolverine and brown bear native who share their natural habitat with moose , reindeer , black grouse and capercaillie and golden eagles share.

The landscape is particularly attractive for nature lovers, hikers, mushroom and berry pickers and in winter as a cross-country skiing area. The Jämt-Norgevägen, a historic pilgrimage route from Selånger on the Swedish Gulf of Bothnia to Trondheim in Norway , crosses not far from the alpine pastures .
