Oviken is a village ( småort ) with 164 inhabitants (2015) in the Swedish municipality of Berg . The place lies on the west side of the narrow southern foothills of the lake Storsjön in the historical province (landskap) Jämtland .
The fertile landscape between Storsjön and Fjäll in the west has long been shaped by a traditional farming culture. The name Oviken is probably an original place name that can best be translated as “ ford ”. It has been documented since 1314.
The parish (församling) Oviken, which also includes numerous localities in the area, has two churches. The “new” church was consecrated in 1905, but is only used for concerts or summer services. It offers space for around 1000 people. In winter it is not used for cost reasons. The old church from the 16th century serves as the parish church. The community currently has around 1,300 inhabitants, in 1913 there were around 2,200.
Oviksfjäll is to the west of Oviken . It is the closest mountain range to Storsjön. It is also the only mountain that can be seen from Östersund . The Ovikens farms have been cultivating alpine pastures along the so-called Fäbodvägen since the 18th century , which runs on the edge of the fjäll to the west towards Västra Galåbodarna and Arådalen .
In Oviken who Trabrennsport a great tradition. There were trotting races on snow and ice as far back as the 1920s, and summer races have been held every year since the trotting track was built in 1972. There is also a runway for planes in Oviken.
The important architect Ferdinand Boberg traveled through the country at the beginning of the 20th century and drew interesting buildings. In Oviken he made the drawings Gravkapell på kyrkogården , Härbrä vid sjöstranden , Kyrkokomplexet and Loge med inbyggd tröskverksvandring in the summer of 1918 .
