Weather / climate

Börtnan is one of the measuring stations of the Swedish meteorological institute SMHI and has become known as one of the cold poles in the country over the past few years. The lowest temperature in Sweden can often be measured here, and record values to the contrary can also occur.

The low temperatures in Börtnan are usually measured in the early morning hours. One of the reasons that explain the striking temperature records is the Ljungan's microclimate. The low water temperatures of the river are based, among other things, on the regulation of the Ljungan, which was completed at the beginning of the 1970s. From the water reservoir in Lake Flåsjön (3 km upstream of the village), cold ground water is directed downstream to the dammed lake Börtnessjön. Before the construction of the water reservoir and the dam, the water level was very low after the spring flood, which meant that the water could warm up slightly and reached bathing temperatures from July. Temperatures reach normal values at lunchtime. Inconsistent, the highest daytime temperature has already been recorded in Börtnan, and that in the middle of winter.

saying

The place name Börtnan is known nationwide due to its mention in the Swedish proverb Ja ligg, sa Jens i Börtnan då han tappade långmjölkskaggen ( loosely translated: That's good for you, said Jens about the broken pieces when he dropped the milk jug in Börtnan). This expresses the criticism of a provincial, sometimes only pretended devotion to God, which knows how to reduce everything in the sense of "It comes, how it comes" to the simple relationship of cause and effect even when its own failure (here: the lack of care when carrying the milk jug) first set the causal process in motion and one tries to gloss over the result, for which one basically does not want to be responsible.
