Galaktion of Stara Zagora ( Bulgarian Галактион Старозагорски ) secular name Georgi Ljubenow Tabakov (also Georgi Lyubenov Tabakov written Bulgarian Георги Любенов Табаков * 26. February 1949 in Wetren , Bulgaria ) is a high Bulgarian Orthodox clergyman since 2000 Metropolitan of the Diocese of Stara Zagora of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church , member of the Holy Synod and former member of the Bulgarian Parliament .

Life

Today's Metropolitan Galaktion was born in 1949 in the Thracian village of Wetren, not far from Pazardzhik with the secular name Georgi Lyubenow Tabakow. At the age of 17 he was admitted to the seminary of the Spiritual Academy of Sofia , which was located in the Tscherepisch train station , near the Tscherepisch monastery , during the communist rule (1945-1990) . After graduating from the Academy in 1969, Georgi became a monk by the name of Galaktion and joined the Batschkowo Monastery , where he was appointed Jerodiacon that same year . Between August 1969 and September 1970 he worked as a priest in the Rila Monastery . On September 27, 1970 Galaktion was ordained a priest monk in the Batschkowo Monastery . Between November 1, 1970 and June 30, 1976 he was a priest in the Maglisch Monastery . During this time he graduated from the Sofia Spiritual Academy.

Between July 1, 1976 and September 30, 1978, Galaktion was Protosynkellos of the Diocese of Vraza , before going to the Moscow Spiritual Academy for a two-year course in 1978 . After obtaining the scientific title of “candidate for theological science”, he returned to the diocese of Wraza, where he continued to work as a protosyncless.

From October 1st, 1981 to November 30th, 1982 he completed a specialization course at the Eastern European Institute in Regensburg . After his return from Germany, Galaktion was appointed hegumen of the Rila monastery on December 1, 1982 and hegumen of the Batschkowo monastery on July 1, 1985. In 1986 Galaktion became titular bishop with the title Velichki and Vicar of the Diocese of Vidin . In 1987, after the death of Metropolitan Filaret von Widin , Galaktion became vicar of the diocese of Wraza and from January 1st, 1988 vicar of the diocese of Stara Sagora .

Between 1993 and 1995, Galaktion supported the opposing patriarch Pimen , but later returned ruefully to the bosom of the Church. In 1995, by a resolution of the Holy Synod, Bishop Galaktion became chairman of the Church Council of the Patriarchal Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky in Sofia .

On February 20, 2000 he was elected Metropolitan of the Diocese of Stara Sagora and appointed seven days later.

On September 4th, 2007 it became known that Metropolit Galaktion is an employee of the Bulgarian secret service .
