Galaxian is an arcade game by Namco that was released in 1979. It was the first arcade game to use real RGB colors for representation.

Overview

Galaxian was a hugely successful title for Namco. It was not only the first arcade game with real colors (previously black and white monitors were used, over which different colored foils were placed in parts), but also contained the successful game principle of Space Invaders , in which armies of aliens put the player in whose spaceship attacked. However, Galaxian expanded this idea to include insect-like opponents who repeatedly fly kamikaze attacks against the player.

chronology

The success of Galaxian resulted in several successors and offshoots. The most successful of these was without a doubt Galaga , which even surpassed its predecessor in terms of popularity.

Standard Arcade:

Arcade Laserdisk:

  • Galaxian3 (1990) Galaxian 3: Project Dragoon for 6 players
  • Attack Of The Zolgear (1994) (a ROM and laserdisc upgrade for Project Dragoon)

Special version:

  • Galaxian3 (1990) for 28 players on a 360 ° screen

Other games were also released under the name Galaxian , but these were not developed by Namco and are therefore not part of the Galaxian tribe .

The "Führer" ship of the attacking Galaxian "Convoys" appears in many games produced by Namco, from Pac-Man to Star Fox: Assault . The player's ship itself is called the “Galaxip”. Before the start of the game, the player is informed that he will receive a “Galaxip” bonus when he reaches 7000 points. These 7000 points for the extra ship were the rule in the delivery state of the game, but the machine operators could also set higher values of 10000, 12000 or 20,000 points as the threshold for the bonus "Galaxip" via dip switches on the system board.

Because of its importance and the success it has achieved, Galaga is still popular among collectors. It is classified as one of the "Top 100 video games" by the Killer List of Videogames (KLOV) website .

The highest score ever in Galaxian was set by Aart van Vliet on May 27, 2009 in Weirs Beach, New Hampshire. He scored 1,653,270 points, surpassing the previous record set by Gary S. Whelan in 2006 (1,114,550 points).

The game has also been ported to many home computers and game consoles. Most recently as part of Namco Museum (2001, on Sony PSP and Windows: 2005).

There is also Galaxian as a bonus level in other computer games, such as Ridge Racer and Mortal Kombat 3.
