Gallows field

In the early modern period, places near places of execution were referred to as gallows fields . These are mostly fields next to the gallows for burying the executed. One example is the gallows field on the island of Reichenau ; the name still exists as a field name . This place of execution was not allowed to be on the island itself, but on the mainland shore of Lake Constance.

Since the criminals who perished on the death penalty were not allowed to be buried in consecrated ground , i.e. in a church cemetery , the executioner usually buried them near the place of execution. Quickly sat down then most of these fields in the vernacular , the term gallows field by.
