Cross of the poor
An arm sinners cross or arm-sinners cross , colloquially also called "gallows cross", is a small monument on the way to a former place of execution. It is either a floor cross or a wayside shrine . Often it can only be identified as a cross for sinners because of the nearby historical execution site. He was therefore sometimes assigned other functions, for example that of an atonement cross .
Sometimes the term is hangdog Cross for processional crosses used, which were carried before the condemned, or for crosses that were placed in the cell of a convicted just before the execution. In addition, in the cross typology the Antonius or Tau cross and in the history of art the representation of a gallows on which Christ hangs is referred to as the gallows cross .
At the cross of arms at an execution site, the delinquent was urged to show repentance by kneeling down and praying. The priest who accompanied the delinquent to the execution prayed for the condemned man at this point and, if requested, made his confession . The relatives were allowed to accompany the death row inmate to the cross.
Well-documented and listed crosses for poor sinners or gallows can be found in Dreis or Oberweis , for example . The crosses for sin in Sankt Stefan im Gailtal , Kautzen or St. Veit an der Glan are on Austria's list of monuments.
The so-called gallows cross from the Vienna Woods, on the other hand, was erected as a reminder that, according to legend, the execution of an innocent was averted here by a divine judgment .
