Galina Romanova

Galina Fjodorovna Romanowa ( Russian Галина Фёдоровна Романова ; born December 25, 1918 in Romankowo , Yekaterinoslav Gouvernement , Ukrainian People's Republic ; † November 3, 1944 in Berlin-Plötzensee ) was a Soviet doctor and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Romanowa was born as the daughter of a village blacksmith in Romankowo ( Ukrainian Романкове / Romankowe , now part of the Ukrainian city ​​of Kamjanske ). After finishing school, she attended a medical vocational school (pilot plant) for three years and became a member of the Komsomol . In 1937 her parents were arrested by the domestic secret service NKVD and she herself expelled from the Komsomol. She studied at the Dnipropetrovsk Medical Institute for five years , but failed to graduate due to the war. The German occupiers allowed her to graduate in 1942. On July 1, 1942, like other graduates, she was deported to Germany by the Nazis to provide medical care for forced laborers . She worked as a doctor in several prison camps (first in Wildau , from December 1942 in Sachsenhausen concentration camp and sub-camps).

At that time she became a member of the European Union resistance group to help Jews and other persecuted people. In addition, she organized contact with resistance groups among the forced laborers and helped to supply them with food and obtain information.

Romanowa was arrested on October 6, 1943, sentenced to death on April 27, 1944 , and executed in Plötzensee on November 3, 1944 .
