The Harz bedstraw ( Galium saxatile L. ) ( Syn .: Galium hercynicum Weigel , Galium harcynicum Weigel orth. Var.) Is a member of the Rubiaceae family that is widespread in Central Europe.

description

The Harz Bedstraw is a perennial herbaceous plant that usually grows 10 to 30 cm high . The bare and square stem grows either lying down - with non-flowering shoots - or upright - with flowering shoots. When dry, the whole plant becomes more or less black. The finely reticulated and flat foliage leaves are usually attached to the stem in a whorl-shaped group of six. The lower ones are obovate, the upper ones lanceolate. They are single-nerved and widest in the middle. On the edge, they have forward-facing teeth.

The flower stalks are slightly longer than the flowers, whose blunt, four-lobed, white crown reaches a width of two to three mm. The finely pointed black fruit is about 1.5 mm long and sits on straight fruit stalks.

The Harz Bedstraw flowers mainly in July and August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22 or 44.

Distribution and location requirements

The Harz bedstraw occurs in Europe and the Azores. It has its main distribution in Western and Central Europe. The distribution decreases significantly to the east, but extends to central Russia. In Germany, the species is common in the north and west of the area. In addition, it is missing over longer distances. Galium saxatile is rare in Austria and Switzerland .

The Harz bedstraw grows in grass grass, dwarf shrub heaths and in sparse pine, oak and fir forests. It prefers fresh, acidic, lime poor and humus sandy or sandy loam soils. In Central Europe it is a character species of the order Nardetalia, but also occurs in societies of the Quercion roboris, in the Luzulo-Fagetum or Luzulo-Abietum.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two varieties:

  • Galium saxatile var. Saxatile : It occurs in Europe and the Azores.
  • Galium saxatile var. Vivianum (Kliphuis) Ortega Olive. & Devesa (Syn .: Galium hercynicum subsp. Vivianum Kliphuis ): It occurs in central and northern Portugal and in north-western and central Spain.
