The passage grave in Skovtofte Forest is located south of Helletofte Farm, about 2.5 km north of Tranekær on the Danish island of Langeland . A dirt road leads along the farm into the small forest parcel Skovtofte. The passage grave ( Danish Jættestue ) is not far from the southern edge of the forest, roughly in the middle. The passage grave is a form of Neolithic megalithic systems , which consists of a chamber and a structurally separated, lateral passage. This form is primarily found in Denmark, Germany and Scandinavia, as well as occasionally in France and the Netherlands. Neolithic monuments are an expression of the culture and ideology of Neolithic societies. Their origin and function are considered to be the hallmarks of social development.

Scheme of passage grave (cross-section) 1 = support stone, 2 = cap stone, 3 = mound, 4 = seal, 5 = wedge stones, 6 = access, 7 = threshold stone. 8 = floor slabs, 9 = sub-floor depots, 10 = intermediate masonry 11 = curb stones

description

The passage grave of the funnel cup culture (TBK) dates from the Neolithic Age 3500–2800 BC. Chr. And lies in an approximately 20 m long and nine meters wide north-south oriented, quadrangular barn bed . On the northern edge of the hill the curb stones are almost complete, in the south only sparse remains remain, in the eastern access area two curb stones have been preserved.

The complete approximately 16 supporting stones of the approximately 8.0 × 2.0 m large, slightly oval chamber are almost as high as a man on the inside. All (probably eight) cap stones are missing. From the relatively short corridor , two bearing stones, a cap stone, the locking frame and the threshold stone have been preserved.

The megalithic complex was excavated by the Langelands Museum in 1948/49. Objects from the middle and late Neolithic period were found in the chamber . In front of the corridor were shards from the construction of the facility. The finds are exhibited in the museum.

Nearby is the Helgetoft Langdysse .
