Gangxi ( Chinese  港 西 镇 , Pinyin Gǎngxī Zhèn ) is a large community in the Chongming district of the suburban government of Shanghai , China . In the 2000 census, Gangxi had 16,802 inhabitants. The zip code is 202154.

Gangxi is located on the island of Chongming Dao (the northern of the three red islands on the map) in the north of the administrative area of ​​the city of Shanghai (see map). The large community is located in the western center of the island and has an area of ​​14.9 km². Chongming is located in the mouth of the Yangtze River , which flows into the East China Sea .

Gangxi was founded in May 1950 as "Gangxi Municipality" and was converted into a People's Commune in September 1958 . In February 1984 the parish status was restored. It was not until November 1995 that Gangxi became the present-day community.
