history

During the German colonial rule (1898–1914) a road was built between Garapan and Tanapag . Garapan was chosen as the administrative seat of the Japanese Empire when Japan was awarded the Japanese South Seas Mandate by the League of Nations in 1920. Under Nan'yō Kōhatsu , the city developed very strongly and in the mid-1930s the city had about 14,000 inhabitants, mostly Japanese and Koreans .

The prosperity ended with the end of the Second World War . During the battle for Saipan in 1944 the place was badly hit. The few survivors were forcibly taken to Japan . Large resorts emerged in the 1970s . Some of the few remaining buildings from the Japanese era , such as the Nan'yo-cho Saipan Hospital, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
