García Íñiguez

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

García Íñiguez ( Basque Gartzea Eneko ; † 882 ) was King of Pamplona (Navarra) from the House of Íñiguez from 851/852 to 882 . He was the son of the founder of the dynasty Íñigo Arista .

García took over the reign in Pamplona after his father fell ill . He allied himself with the head of the Banu Qasi , Musa ibn Musa , against the Emir of Al-Andalus , Abd ar-Rahman II , by whom they were defeated in a battle in 843. This defeat apparently damaged his sovereign authority, because in the years 858 and 860 a García Jiménez is attested as king in Pamplona, of whom it is unclear whether he appeared as co- or counter-king.

In 859 the land around Pamplona was sacked by invading Vikings . King García Iñiguez was captured by the Vikings and was only released again for a large ransom - although it is unclear whether he was caught in exile in Andalusia in Pamplona or somewhere outside Navarre. In 860, García's eldest son Fortún was captured by the emir.

In the year 882 (269 AH ) García allied with the Moorish rebel Umar ibn Hafsun . In the Battle of Aibar, however, they were defeated by Prince al-Mundhir and García fell. He was buried in the Abbey of San Salvador de Leire .

According to the Codex de Roda , García Íñiguez had three children from his marriage to an unspecified Urraca. These and their descendants were:

  1. Fortún Garcés († after 905), King of Pamplona.
    1. Oneca Fortúnez; 1. ∞ with Abdallah of Córdoba († 912), 2. ∞ with Aznar Sánches of Larraún.
    2. Íñigo Fortúnez; ∞ with Sancha Garcés, daughter of García Jiménez .
    3. Velasco Fortúnez.
      1. Jimena Velásquez; ∞ with Íñigo Garcés, son of García Jiménez .
    4. Lope Fortúnez.
  2. Sancho Garcés.
    1. Aznar Sánchez, lord of Larraún; ∞ with Oneca Fortúnez.
      1. Sancho Aznarez.
      2. Toda Aznárez († after 970); ∞ with Sancho I. Garcés († 925), King of Pamplona.
      3. Sancha Aznarez; ∞ with Jimeno Garcés († 931), King of Pamplona.
  3. Oneca Garcés; ∞ with Aznar II. Galíndez , Count of Aragón.

According to the Muslim author Ibn Hayyan, García had another illegitimate daughter who was married to the Moorish Walí of Huesca .

Antonio Ubieto Arteta also attributes a second wife to him, Leodegundia named in the Codex de Roda , daughter of an Ordoño who was married to a King García. Ubieto Arteta recognizes in her a daughter of King Ordoño I of Asturias and her marriage to García Íñiguez, the only king of that name at the time, could have sealed an alliance between Pamplona and Asturias.
