Garður ( Eng. Garden , wall ) is a place and a separate municipality in Iceland on the northern tip of the Reykjanes peninsula and is 10 kilometers north of Keflavík on road no. 45. On January 1, 2011, Garður had 1,452 inhabitants.
Surname
Originally the place was called Skagagarður , d. H. the garden / wall of the peninsula . A wall of this name from the 10th century has actually been discovered on site, stretching from Útskálakirkja in Garður to Kirkjuból (Miðnes).
history
The place used to be an important fishing and trading place, although the port conditions are not particularly good to this day. The Garður peninsula was rich and particularly densely populated, with 647 inhabitants already living here in 1910, a large place for Iceland at that time. But Sandgerði and later Keflavík withdrew the jobs. Traces of the old settlement have been preserved. There are still three fish factories in town.
Economy and Services
In the meantime, many people commute to Keflavík or Reykjavík , so that the total population has increased in recent years from 1,065 residents in 1988 to 1,452 residents at the beginning of 2011.
The Grunnskóli is one of the oldest schools in the country (founded in 1872). There are also kindergartens, a health center, the municipal administration and a sports center with a swimming pool.
There is a campsite and a guesthouse for tourists, a post office, a bank and a petrol station as well as shops serve the needs of the residents.
Flora and fauna
One of the two lighthouses (the big one) is also used for bird watching. Here in early summer v. a. also migratory birds such as the Canada goose and the arctic tern as well as many species of gulls .
At the campsite by the lighthouses you have a good view and, if the weather cooperates, you can sometimes see whales and dolphins and, rarely, seals.
A hiking trail leads along the coast to Sandgerði , but it can be covered with kelp and pea weed left behind by the last storm. The beach of Garður is particularly exposed to the force of the open sea because it is located at the entrance to Faxaflói Bay .
Kirkjuból
The former Kirkjuból farm near Garður was mostly inhabited by rich farmers and the country's upper class. So it is understandable that historically important events also took place there.
In 1433, according to the chronicle, a group of men came to visit with Bishop Jón von Skálholt . Among them was one who had asked in vain for the hand of Margaret, the daughter of the Danish governor. At that time the farm was owned by the governor. The rejected one started fire, the daughter was the only one to escape. She swore to marry the man who would avenge her, and did so. It was a man from the north.
It is also reported that in 1551 the Dane Kristian, who directed the execution of the last Catholic bishop of Iceland, Jón Arason , was slain with his men. Ghost apparitions were subsequently reported. These were ended in a very peculiar way: the corpses were dug up and then the heads were buried at the bottom of the people of the Danish king (see also History of Iceland ).
Museums
At the two lighthouses, one from 1897, the other from 1944, is the regional museum with finds from ships that have sunk near Gardur, as well as tools from the daily life of the inhabitants.
