Gareth Alban Davies

Gareth Alban Davies (born July 30, 1926 in Ton Pentre , Rhondda ; † February 9, 2009 in Aberystwyth ) was a Welsh poet and British Hispanist .

Life

Davies grew up in the coalfield of Wales and did his military service as a miner from 1944 to 1947. He then studied Spanish at Queen's College at the University of Oxford and received his doctorate in 1955 under William J. Entwistle with the work The life and works of Antonio Hurtado de Mendoza, 1586-1644 (published ud T. A poet at court. Antonio Hurtado de Mendoza 1586-1644 , Oxford 1971).

Davies taught exclusively at the University of Leeds , from 1952 as Assistant Lecturer, from 1955 as Lecturer, from 1968 as Senior Lecturer and from 1975 until his retirement in 1986 as Cowdray Professor of Spanish.

Davies was particularly connected to the Welsh language, in which he published three volumes of poetry, biographies, travelogues and a conference volume, as well as translations from both Spanish and French.
