Gareth Huw Evans (* 1980 in Hirwaun , Cynon Valley ) is a Welsh director, screenwriter, film editor and action choreographer. He became known through his films Merantau , The Raid and The Raid 2 , which brought the Indonesian martial arts variant Pencak Silat to the cinema.

Life

Evans was born and raised in Hirwaun , Cynon Valley . He graduated from the University of Glamorgan with a Masters of Arts in screenwriting and made a living helping people learn Welsh over the Internet.

After directing a low budget film called Footsteps , he was hired as a freelance director for a documentary about the Indonesian martial arts of Pencak Silat . He discovered the Indonesian martial artist Iko Uwais , who worked as a supplier for a telephone company. Evans cast Uwais for his 2009 film Merantau , which became a cult film . He planned to make a major action film , but instead made The Raid  (2011). After the success of The Raid , the way was paved for the sequel The Raid 2  (2014).

Evans lives in Jakarta with his wife Maya and daughter Sophie .

Awards

In November 2011, The Raid won the Midnight Madness Award at the Toronto International Film Festival .
