from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Garlieb Hanker (born September 10, 1758 in Hamburg ; † March 5, 1807 ) was a German lawyer and poet .

Life

Garlieb Hanker was born on September 10, 1758, the son of Senator Christian Hanker. After attending a grammar school, he studied law at the University of Göttingen from 1779 , later at the University of Gießen , where he received his licentiate degree in May 1783 . Then he returned to his hometown Hamburg, where he became a lawyer . From an early age he had been more interested in poetry than law. Namely, already during his high school and study time he had written several poetic works, some under pseudonyms , for example as Friedrich Ludwig Epheu . However, only a few were printed. From 1779 to 1785 Hanker had written 19 works. He married in 1802, but died on March 5, 1807.

The pseudonyms are one reason why Garlieb Hanker and his works are very unknown. Nobody suspected Hanker to be under the pseudonym Epheu , so he is not mentioned in important encyclopedias such as Hamburg's literary life in the 18th century or the history of Hamburg scholars . It is only mentioned in later paperback books .
