Garry Gross (born November 6, 1937 in the Bronx , New York City - † November 30, 2010 New York City) was an American fashion photographer .

After studying at Colorado State University , Gross was soon successful as a fashion photographer, whose work appeared in magazines such as Gentlemen's Quarterly , Cosmopolitan and New York Magazine . He made portraits of famous people such as Calvin Klein , Gloria Steinem , Whitney Houston , and Lou Reed .

Gross works with the Center for Animal Behavior in New York and became a certified dog trainer in 2002. Photographing dogs eventually became his specialty. His work has received numerous awards, including that of the Art Directors Club .

Gross became best known for his nude photographs , which he took in 1975 of Brooke Shields, who was then only ten years old with the consent of her mother, showing Brooke Shields naked and with makeup in various poses in a bathtub. Not only did these photographs garner widespread press coverage, but they have also been shown in renowned museums such as the Tate Modern Gallery and the Guggenheim Museum . Brooke Shields later tried to obtain the rights to these images in a legal dispute, but failed in court.
