Gartenberg is the largest district of the city of Geretsried in Upper Bavaria with around 11,900 inhabitants . Other districts: Gelting (approx. 1,800 inhabitants), Geretsried (approx. 7,800 inhabitants) and Stein (approx. 2,500 inhabitants).

Historically, the Gartenberg district was created - completely new - in the Wolfratshausen Forest : During the Second World War there was an explosives factory for the armaments industry of Dynamit Aktien Gesellschaft (DAG), and the DAG administration building became the town hall of today's city of Geretsried. After the Second World War, the forest was cleared to make room for thousands of expellees from the Sudetenland , Silesia and Hungarian Germans . Many of the street names are reminiscent of the old homeland.

The name of the district garden mountain is identical to an old field name in whose area the garden mountain is located. This is an elongated, mostly wooded hill west of the Gartenberg district and the federal road 11 . The hill runs through almost the entire urban area in a north-south direction, is partially a nature reserve and for the last time separates the Isar - from the Loisach valley before Wolfratshausen. Until the founding of the municipality of Geretsried in 1950, the name Wolfratshausen -Gartenberg was also used in addresses. The name Gartenberg was available when a name was sought for the then newly founded community. Most recently the name Geretsried was given preference because, in contrast to the field name Gartenberg, it was already historically linked to the name of the oldest settlement in the municipality.

The district of Gartenberg is located south of Wolfratshausen between the river Isar and the federal road 11, which has the following exits in the district:

  • Geretsried-North
  • Geretsried-Mitte (the town hall of Geretsried is located here)
  • Geretsried school center

In the district there is a primary, secondary and secondary school as well as a grammar school and a music school. There is a small indoor swimming pool, a tennis facility with 10 places, an ice rink and a sports stadium.

In the period from 2005 to 2007 the new center of Geretsried was built in the vicinity of the town hall through several renovations and with the planned extension of the Wolfratshausen S-Bahn is to receive one of three stops in the city area called Geretsried-Mitte.
