Gartnait, 7th Earl of Mar
Gartnait, 7th Earl of Mar (also Gartnet or Gratney , * after 1266 , † before September 1305 ), was a Scottish nobleman .
Life
His father was Domhnall, 6th Earl of Mar , his mother was Helen, daughter of Dafydd ap Llywelyn , Prince of Gwynedd and widow of Malcolm Macduff, 6th Earl of Fife, who died in 1266 .
His name appears for the first time in a correspondence between his father and the English King Edward I , dated June 11, 1297. After the death of his father, he must have taken over his title, even if he does not have this title in the few written evidence that has survived used.
Little is known about his subsequent life. He, too, must have continued to play his father's double game: The Bishop of Aberdeen thanked him in the name of the king (Edward I) for the good neighborhood and the quick support of the castellan of Inverness in the siege by rebellious Scots. In his reply to this letter he belittled his achievements, without the troops of the " Countess of Ross " this help would not have been possible. At the same time he had given his son and heir Domhnall to Kildrummy Castle , which at the time was commanded by Robert Bruce . This son came from his marriage to Christina (also Christiane) Bruce, Robert's sister, after 1292. The marriage itself was referred to as a "double tie," which tied the two families together even more tightly. The second child from this marriage was Ellen; whose granddaughter Jane (Janet) married his second wife Robert Erskine, 1st Lord Erskine , thus paving the legal claim of the family Erskine on the title of Earl of Mar .
