Gary Schocker

Gary Schocker (born October 18, 1959 ) is an American flautist and composer.

Schocker made his debut as a flute soloist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of fifteen . He has toured Australia, New Zealand, Colombia, Panama, Taiwan, Germany, France, Canada and Japan and has often performed in a duo with guitarist Jason Vieaux . Musicians he has worked with include Pinchas Zuckerman , Michael Tilson Thomas , Earl Wild , Jessye Norman , Julius Baker , James Levine , James Galway , Bruno Canino , Oscar Shumsky , Eduardo Fernández and Jean-Philippe Collard .

In addition to pieces for flute and other chamber music, Schocker's more than 100 compositions also include choral works, songs and several musicals, including Far From the Madding Crowd and The Awakening , both of which were winners of the Global Search for New Musicals in Great Britain. Schocker has twice won the International Clarinet Association's composition competition and has received the National Flute Association's Newly Published Music Award several times . For James Galway he composed the three-movement flute concerto Green Places , which he premiered at the Adair Festival in Ireland. Schocker gives private flute lessons and teaches at New York University .
