Gaspar DiGregorio
Gaspar or Gaspare DiGregorio (* 1905 , † June 11, 1970 in Smithtown (New York) ) was an American mobster , high-ranking mafioso of the American Cosa Nostra and head of the Bonanno family . He is considered a key figure in the so-called "banana war" within this New York mafia family .
biography
As the Caporegime of the Bonnano family it seemed that DiGregorio could become Consigliere ; but Chief Joseph "Joe Bananas" Bonanno appointed his son Salvatore "Bill" Bonanno to do so.
This decision left some resentment at DiGregorio and there was also other rumor in the clan. In 1964 Joe Bonanno even fled New York because he no longer felt safe in the city and the Mafia commission appointed DiGregorio as the new head in 1965 , which fueled the internal conflict further and led to the so-called "banana war".
DiGregorio tried to finally resolve the conflict by force by inviting the Bonanno faction to an alleged peace meeting in Brooklyn, only to kill them all there. The plan failed and, surprisingly, no one was injured in the immediate shooting.
The conflict entered a new phase because the heads of the other families - Carlo Gambino , Tommy Lucchese , Joseph Colombo and Vito Genovese - now supported Paul Sciacca and appointed him head in 1966. DiGregorio was de facto sidelined and spent the last years of his life on Long Island . In 1970 DiGregorio St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Smithtown, New York, died of lung cancer and was buried in the Saint Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York .
