Gastao Cruz
Gastão Cruz (born July 20, 1941 in Faro , Algarve , Portugal ) is a Portuguese poet, Germanist , translator, literary and theater critic.
Life
Cruz was born in Faro in the Algarve. At the age of 17 he went to Lisbon to study English and German at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Lisbon . After finishing his studies he worked as a teacher for some time.
He had his first publication in 1961 with poems in a famous anthology . In addition to his work as a teacher, he also worked as a literary and theater critic in the 1960s and 1970s, for newspapers and magazines such as Diário de Lisboa , Seara Nova , Crítica , Vida Mundial , O Jornal . The main themes of his poetic work are death, the homeland of the Algarve, transcendence , the sea and the Portuguese colonial war .
He was able to live out his passion for the theater not only as a critic, but also as a co-founder of the theater company " Grupo de Teatro Hoje " from 1975 to 1994.
From 1980 to 1986 he lived in London and taught as a lecturer in Portuguese literature at King's College there .
As a translator, he has translated works by William Shakespeare , Anton Chekhov , August Strindberg , Jean Cocteau , Sandro Penna , and William Blake into Portuguese. One work has so far only been translated into French.
Gastão Cruz lives in Lisbon, is a board member of the Luis Miguel Nava Foundation and editor of the foundation's own magazine "Relámpago". Cruz was married to the writer Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão .
