The “Zum Rautenkranz” inn was a traditional inn in the town of Eilenburg . The building at Bergstrasse 28, the appearance of which dates back to the mid- 18th century , is now used as a residential building. It is a registered cultural monument in the list of monuments of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Saxony . (Object number: 08973316)

history

The first written mention of the property dates back to the 14th century . At that time there was a sheep farm on the property, which was part of the Eilenfeld manor, which had emerged from a Vorwerk and was part of the Eilenburg office . Possibly beer was served there in the 17th century , as was the case in the sheep farm in Kültzschau (today Eilenburg-Ost ).

The cartridge above the entrance portal shows the year 1743. In this year the building in its present appearance was created through a new construction or considerable redesign of an unknown previous building. In the years that followed, the building served as a break for carters on the centuries-old trade route, which in the Middle Ages connected the Rhineland and the Leipzig exhibition center with Silesia as the Via Regia Lusatiae Superioris .

Both the Prussian Oberpostdirektion in Merseburg and the Saxon Oberpostdirektion in Leipzig designated the Gasthof Rautenkranz in May 1852 as a stop for passengers boarding the mail between Eilenburg and Leipzig. Until the communist era into the station remained Rautenkranz station in Kraftpost- and later in state-owned road transport to and from Leipzig. The building lost its function as an inn sooner. After 1989/1990 the building was bought by the Sparkasse Delitzsch-Eilenburg, renovated and served as a bank branch for about ten years. The former inn is now a residential building.

architecture

The building is located in the Berg district of Eilenburg on Bergstrasse in the corner of Brunnerstrasse. Originally erected in open development, the building now has a single-storey extension to the west, which closes the gap to the further development of the roadside in Bergstrasse. The three-story building has a rectangular floor plan. The street-side facade is designed symmetrically. The sandstone-framed entrance portal with a double-leaf wooden door is spanned by a segmented arch. Above this is a sandstone cartouche with the relief of a crowned diamond wreath . Below that, the year 1743 indicates the time of origin. The original facade design, which contrasted the vertical emphasis by the ribbon windows with a horizontal structure, was replaced by a contemporary, uniform plaster facade during the renovation in the early 1990s.

The building is covered by a hipped roof. On the street and courtyard side, the roof has three bat dormers each , which are also symmetrically arranged.
