In the place of today's inn there has been an inn since the 17th century. The previous building was already called "Zum Goldenen Löwen", was significantly smaller and was demolished in 1909. A little further north, Gottlob Käppler had the building that is preserved today erected in 1908. It took over the name of the previous building that Käppler had previously taken over. The new ballroom was now roughly where the old inn had been. In the new "Golden Lion" there was a standing beer hall and ballroom as well as a large ballroom for 500 people and a bowling alley . The remaining rooms were already living space back then. The various events such as vaudeville shows, balls, celebrations and concerts made the “lion” well known across the region.

The city of Freital, which was created on October 1st through the merger of Potschappel with the neighboring communities of Deuben and Döhlen , was a stronghold of social democracy in Saxony in the 1920s . After the collapse of the National Socialist dictatorship in Germany, the first party congress of the Saxon SPD was held in the Golden Lion from October 5 to 7, 1945 . The Dresden theaters, which were bombed by the war, used the inn as a venue in the post-war years, despite the sometimes unfavorable conditions for theater performances. To improve the situation, the city donated 10,000 marks to the Golden Lion. This period in the history of the inn came to an end in 1948.

Even during the GDR era, the Golden Lion was known. He was now as HO operated -Gaststätte and was the commitment of Freitaler dance school Richter venue for national and international dance tournaments. In addition, some structural changes were made. After the fall of the Wall , the bar could not continue and had to close. The flood in 2002 badly damaged the ballroom, so it had to be demolished in 2004.

In 2009 an Austrian investor had the building completely renovated. The downsized restaurant was reopened by new owners on September 1, 2011 and operated until December 2018. In April 2019 the new owner opened the beer garden - on May 1, 2019 the renovated restaurant followed.
