The Gaußstein in the Lichtenberg Mountains is a listed Gaußstein in Salzgitter-Lichtenberg in Lower Saxony . It was built in 1822 by mathematician and geodesist Carl Friedrich Gauß as a surveying pillar. It stands on the hilltop of the Burgberg, which is 241 meters above sea level, in the elevated center of a medieval hilltop castle next to the ruins of Lichtenberg Castle .

The Gaußstein is the Lichtenberg station of the Gauß'schen Landesaufnahme , with which Gauss measured the Kingdom of Hanover on behalf of King George IV . The other stations targeted from the Lichtenberg station are Brocken , Hils (45 km), Deister (55 km), Falkenberg (100 km) and Garßen (55 km).

The stone plinth was restored in 1951, with the base plate with the marking points for the measurements being reattached. In 1982 the stone was renovated again and a plate donated by the iron foundry Gebrüder Schreitel was attached. It contains the life data of Carl Friedrich Gauß and honors his work.
