Gaudêncio Thiago de Mello

Gaudêncio Thiago de Mello (* 1933 in Barreirinha ; † November 11, 2013 ) was a Brazilian musician (percussion, guitar, vocals), composer, arranger, music teacher and soccer coach.

Life

Gaudêncio Thiago de Mello, brother of the writer Thiago de Mello , first studied architecture, then physical education. In his native Brazil he was a professional soccer coach. As an autodidact, he began a career as a musician and moved to New York at the age of 33, studied classical guitar playing and founded the Guitar Society at the United Nations in 1970, which he chaired for ten years. The first recordings were made in 1973 with his band Amazon. He also founded and directed the jazz ensemble at the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City, where he taught for a total of 29 years. In 2000, Down Beat voted him one of the ten best percussionists in the USA. He played u. a. with Sharon Isbin on Journey to the Amazon and with Paul Winter on Earth-Voice of a Planet, was active in the New York musicians' union Local 802 and in the campaign "Justice for Jazz Artists".
