Friedrich Bernhard Henkel (born July 26, 1936 in Zella / Rhön ) is a German sculptor and graphic artist .

Life

Friedrich B. Henkel is the only child of the married couple Karl and Maria Henkel. The father worked as an authorized signatory in one of the wood carving companies in the Rhön, the mother was a housewife. After primary school in his hometown, he completed a two-year wood carving apprenticeship from 1950 with his great uncle, the sculptor Nikolaus Gille in Kirstingshof / Rhön. For a year, Henkel continued his training at the technical school for wood sculptors in Empfertshausen / Rhön, which he completed in 1953 with the qualification as a wood sculptor. He studied from 1953 to 1956 at the University of Applied Arts in Leipzig in the plastic department and from 1956 to 1958 at the Art Academy Berlin-Weißensee with Theo Balden and Waldemar Grzimek , plastic department. Henkel dropped out of college due to financial difficulties. As the son of an employee, he only received a reduced scholarship.

In 1958 he married the Berlin photographer Dorothea Rudszeck (* 1937). The two have three children, a son and two daughters born in 1958, born in 1959 and 1964.

From 1958 to 1959, Henkel worked in Waldemar Grzimek's studio. Among other things, he worked on the realization of the memorial group for the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp . During this time Henkel got to know the sculptors Richard Scheibe and Gerhard Marcks while visiting Grzimek's studio . A contact with Marcks quickly arose and an exchange of letters over many years. Marcks later made studio visits to Henkel in Berlin. From Marcks, Henkel received continued encouragement, support, and advice. The correspondence was partially published.

From 1960 to 1965, Henkel worked as an architect in the Potsdam- Babelsberg film studio . In her free time she created sculptural works of her own choice. With this work he applied for a master class at the German Academy of the Arts in Berlin. In 1966 he began studying for a master class with Fritz Cremer , which he completed in 1969. In 1969 a year-long assistant at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee, plastic department, followed. From 1970 Henkel worked as a freelance sculptor and graphic artist in Berlin. From 1975 to 1994 he carried out various projects in a large studio in Berlin-Niederschönhausen .

From 1978 to 1980, Henkel had a teaching position at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, plastic department. In 1980 he set up a small studio in Biesenthal / Mark Brandenburg . Since then he has been working there mainly on stone in the summer. In 2004 he moved from Berlin to Bernau near Berlin , where he has lived since then. Henkel is also active as a sculptor, draftsman and graphic artist. Travels took him to many European and some North African countries.
