Gauri Lankesh (born January 29, 1962 ; † September 5, 2017 in Bengaluru , Karnataka ) was an Indian journalist and rationalist .

Life

Gauri was the daughter of the writer, translator and journalist P. Lankesh (1935-2000). She worked as the editor of Lankesh Patrike , a weekly newspaper her father started. In 2005 she founded Gauri Lankesh Patrike magazine . Gauri appeared as a critic of the right-wing populist Hindutva policy of the Indian government.

She was shot and killed at close range by strangers on a motorcycle outside her home in Bengaluru in September 2017. Following the murder of Gauri Lankesh, anti-Hindu nationalism activists spontaneously planned demonstrations in Delhi and Mumbai.
