Gaven Donne

Sir Gaven John Donne KBE (born May 8, 1914 , Christchurch , New Zealand ; † March 28, 2010 ) was formerly Chief Justice of Samoa , Niue , Cook Islands , Nauru and Tuvalu , as well as Queen's Representative for the Cook Islands.

Life

Donne was born in Christchurch , New Zealand and trained at Palmerston North Boys 'High School , Hastings Boys' High School , Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Auckland . He was admitted to the bar in 1938 and became a magistrate in 1958.

In his long career, he served on the Supreme Court of Samoa from 1969 . In 1972 he was named Chief Justice of Samoa , in 1974 for the Cook Islands and in 1975 for Niue . In 1978 he ruled on the lawsuits in the Cook Islands elections ( 1978 Cook Islands general election ) and convicted Albert Henry's Cook Islands Party of electoral fraud. As a result, the party lost its power.

In 1982 he was appointed the first Queen's Representative for the Cook Islands. After his tenure, he became Chief Justice of Nauru and Tuvalu in 1985 .

Donne retired in 2001. He was one of the longest-serving judges in the Southern Hemisphere.
