Gavino Matta

Gavino Matta (born June 6, 1910 in Sassari , Sardinia , † January 20, 1954 in Sassari) was an Italian boxer . He won one at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin silver medal in the flyweight . In 1938 he became a professional boxer.

Career

Gavino Matta, who lived on the island of Sardinia, which belongs to Italy, started boxing as a teenager. Nothing is known about its early years. He first appeared in the boxing public in 1934 when he became the Italian flyweight champion. In 1936 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Berlin, where he started in the flyweight division and won a silver medal. In 1937 he also competed as an amateur boxer at the European Championships in Milan.

In 1938 he became a professional boxer and remained in this profession until 1948. He died on January 20, 1954 at the age of only 43 years.

Career as an amateur boxer

In 1934 Gavino Matta became the Italian flyweight champion. In the final, he won over Enrico Buratti on points. In 1935 he repeated this success, again beating Enrico Buratti on points in the final battle. In 1936 he won this title for the third time. His final opponent was Guido Nardecchia , whom he defeated on points.

In 1935 he fought in Chicago in an international match between the USA and Italy in flyweight against the Golden Gloves winner Patsy Urso and defeated this on points. In 1936 Gavino Matti represented Italy at the Olympic Games in Berlin. In the flyweight he defeated Martinus Lambilion, Netherlands, Kaj Fredriksen, Denmark, Raoul Degrysse, Belgium and Lou Laurie from the United States on points. In the final battle he met the German Willi Kaiser , against whom he lost on points. In October 1936 he was in a Europe selection that fought in New York against the United States. He came there in the flyweight to a point victory over Frank Di Marco.

In June 1937 he fought in a European selection in Chicago, Kansas City and New York three times against boxers from the United States. He lost to Jimmy Urso on points, won over Beebe Rich by knockout in the 1st round and lost to Bobby Carroll on points.

In September 1937 he started as an amateur at an international championship for the last time. At the European Championships in Milan he won the flyweight over Otto Lehtinen from Finland on points. In the semifinals he lost to Vilmos Enekes from Hungary and injured himself. Since the third places were still being boxed out at the time, he would have had to fight for this place against Willi Kaiser. However, since Willi Kaiser was also injured, this fight could not take place and both boxers shared 4th place.

Profile career

Gavino Matta played his first professional fight on January 22, 1938. He defeated his compatriot Luigi Costantini by technical knockout in the third round in Sassari in the flyweight. His career lasted until July 26, 1948. On that day he played a fight for the Italian flyweight championship title against Guido Nardecchia in Bologna, which he lost after 12 rounds on points and thus his Italian championship title, which he won on December 16, 1945 in Sassari with a techn. Had won knockout victory in the 7th round over Antonio Morabito, had to give up. In total, he played in his professional career, which was of course negatively influenced by the events of the Second World War , 35 fights, of which he won 24 and lost 9. Zweiwal he fought a draw.

On January 12, 1940, he played in Rome against Enrico Urbinati a fight for the EBU European flyweight title, which was also considered a fight for the Italian title.
