The Gavlen ( English Gavlen Ridge ) is a mountain range in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It represents the southern branch of the Rootshorga in the southern part of the Sverdrupfjella .
The first aerial photographs were taken during the German Antarctic Expedition (1938–1939). Norwegian cartographers mapped it using geodetic surveys and aerial photographs of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition (NBSAE, 1949–1952) and aerial photographs of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960). Its descriptive Norwegian name means ' gable '.
