Gerard Toal

Gerard Toal (Irish: Gearóid Ó Tuathail ) (* 1962 ) is an Irish geographer who teaches as Professor of International Relations at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg . He is one of the best-known representatives of critical geopolitics .

Life

After a first degree in history and geography at the National University of Ireland , which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1982 , Toal took his master's degree in geography at the University of Illinois in 1984 , and in 1989 he studied political geography at Syracuse University for Ph.D. doctorate, the title of his dissertation was: "Critical Geopolitics: The Social Construction of Place and Space in the Practice of Statecraft". His PhD supervisor was John A. Agnew .

Initially, Toal dealt with the deconstruction of classic and current geopolitical arguments on a global scale. His work now focuses on the Caucasus and Bosnia-Herzegovina regions .
