history

The Clyde Navigation Trust was founded in 1858 by parliamentary resolution. It united the city administration, shipowners, traders and industrialists and served the development of trade and infrastructure on the Clyde . The headquarters of the organization was built between 1882 and 1886 to a design by Scottish architect John James Burnet . In 1886 the design for an extension with a campanile was made, but this was not implemented in this form. Burnet also planned the expansion between 1905 and 1908. Burnet planned a second expansion step in 1915, but it was not carried out because the First World War broke out .

description

The Clyde Navigation Trust building is located south of the city center on the right bank of the Clyde near Glasgow Central Station . The three-story building is designed in the neo-renaissance style. The brickwork is rusticated above the granite base . The east-facing facade of the older part of the building along Robertson Street is five axes wide. All building openings close with round arches at ground level . Sculptured ship bows protruding from the facade flank the entrance area, which is designed as a loggia with three arches. Triangular gables crown the elongated windows on the first floor. A high temple facade with four composite columns with unusually designed capitals stretches over it . The tympanum of the final triangular pediment is sculptured in great detail. A Neptune sculpture sits on it.

The design of the newer part of the building corresponds to that of the previous one. The rounded, rounded corner of the building is striking. On the second floor it is lavishly designed with columns with richly ornamented capitals. A lantern with a dome at the end sits on top . Sculptures depict James Watt , Thomas Telford and Henry Bell .
