Prayer week

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A week of prayer in Christianity is a regionally or internationally agreed week in which the faithful are called to offer prayers for a specific cause. In contrast to a novena , which includes constant and daily changing prayers over nine days, prayer weeks are free to design.

Week of prayer of the Evangelical Alliance

The Alliance Prayer Week was initiated in 1846 at the founding meeting of the World Evangelical Alliance and has been held regularly since 1861. In German-speaking countries, it usually takes place in the second week, internationally in the first full week of January.

World Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

The week of prayer for Christian unity is celebrated annually from January 18 to 25 or between Ascension Day and Pentecost. The World Council of Churches (WCC) is in charge. This international week of prayer was initiated in 1909 by the American Paul Francis Wattson (1863–1940). The Popes of the Roman Catholic Church have been supporting this World Week of Prayer since Pope Pius X (1903–1914). The prayer for Christian unity was started in 1916 by Pope Benedict XV. (1914–1922) expanded with an apostolic letter to the entire Catholic Church and continues to be praised by the popes. For the purpose of preparation and implementation, the “Commission for Faith and Church Constitution” (WCC) and the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity draw up joint working papers and put the week of prayer under a common motto.

Other weeks of prayer

In addition to private prayer, for example, in parishes , in prayer circles, in religious communities or in episcopal churches there are often services ( masses , communion or devotions ) for the respective week of prayer. Such concerns include the prayer for spiritual professions , the world prayer octave (it also stands for the world prayer week for Christian unity), the rosary prayers or for current prayer requests. The Christian Association of Young People (YMCA) carried out its World Federation Prayer Week from November 10th to 16th, 2013 under the motto "Be the Change".
