The mountain creek catfish ( Chaetostoma ) form a genus in the family of armor catfish that includes 45 species so far.
The scientific name Chaetostoma is made up of χαιτη (chaite) "hair" and στόμα (stoma) "mouth".
habitat
Mountain creek catfish live in fast-flowing, oxygen-rich rivers of the Andes in northern South America up to an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level. According to the GBIF , specimens of various species have been caught and cataloged in Panama, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.
features
These are small fish with a relatively large mouth and small eyes. The unarmored belly side and the broad, bare snout without barbels are the best features for distinguishing mountain creek catfish from other genera in the armor catfish family. The fish are gray to black in color. Some species have yellow spots or a white or yellow stripe on the caudal fin.
Chaetostoma males have a slightly larger and wider head, a slightly narrower body on the abdomen, and very large pelvic fins and / or pectoral fins. It is believed that the large pelvic fins play a role in the fertilization of the eggs.
Aquaristics
The species C. formosae (as " C. thomasi ") and C. joropo (as " C. milesi ") are mainly exported to Germany for aquaristics . Appropriate keeping includes temperatures between 20 and 23 degrees, oxygen-rich water and sufficient currents in the aquarium. Species from lower-lying regions of origin can also be kept at slightly higher temperatures. Mountain creek catfish have already been successfully bred.
History of description
Johann Jakob von Tschudi described Chaetostoma loborhynchos as the first species belonging to the genus Chaetostoma in 1845 in his work "Investigations on the Peruvian Fauna" .
