The blower hall is an industrial hall built in 1904 in Ilsede in the Peine district , in which hot air was generated for pig iron production in the blast furnaces of the Ilseder Hütte . The hall was in operation until the blast furnace operations were closed in 1983. Today the redesigned and listed building serves as an event location.

history

The blower hall is part of the Ilseder Hütte , which was founded in 1858 and was the first site of the later Salzgitter AG . The hall was built in 1904. In her five compressed gas-powered and built-piston machines air (up to 1200 ° C) for pig iron production in the blast furnaces of the steelworks was needed.

After the Ilseder Hütte survived the Second World War without major damage, extensive investments and modernizations were made in the 1950s. In the 1960s, three modern axial compressors were installed in the blower hall as a replacement, of which the remains of two systems can still be seen in the hall. As the local ore extraction became too expensive in the 1980s and the global steel price fell drastically, the steelworks was shut down in 1983. In 1995 the power station , coking plant and ancillary facilities were also shut down . Since then, the site of the former Ilseder Hütte has been Lower Saxony's largest industrial wasteland .

Todays use

After renovation and modernization measures, the blower hall has been used as an event location with a floor space of around 2000 m² since 2009. The hall consists of a ground-level foyer and a 12 m high, column-free hall on the 1st floor. Various events take place for up to 2000 visitors, such as music concerts, exhibitions, parties, galas, trade fairs and conferences. Between 2009 and 2014 there were around 230 events in and around the hall.

From October 16, 2015 to March 31, 2016, the blower hall was used as an initial reception facility for refugees as part of the administrative assistance provided by the Peine district for the state of Lower Saxony . During this period up to 500 people were housed there at the same time.
