Birth of a Cult Priest ( Japanese教 祖 誕生Kyōso tanjō ) is a Japanese feature film from 1993 based on a satirical novel by Takeshi Kitano . It was directed by Toshihiro Tenma and the script was written by Yuji Kato . The main role played Masato Hagiwara . Pony Canyon Enterprises and Yamada Right Vision Corporation produced the comedy .

action

A young man, Kazuo Takayama, encounters a religious sect. His doubts about the community diminish when the sect's old man Tetsuharu heals a lame woman and she can walk again. Although the showing turns out to be a fraud, Kazuo is impressed and joins the sect with her. With her he goes on the hunt for creditors.

Tetsuharu, the most powerful member of the sect, has come to believe himself to be a faith healer and preaches other things that the sect managers Daisuke and Shiba do not like. The old man is deposed and Kazuo is appointed the new guru of the religious community.

The film was released in Japanese theaters on November 20, 1993. He later appeared on video in Japan .

Awards

Masato Hagiwara won the Best Young Actor and Most Popular Actor categories at the Japanese Academy Awards in 1994 . As Best Newcomer , he also received the Nikkan Sports Film Award as Best Supporting Actor an award at the Yokohama Film Festival . He also won all the prizes for his portrayals in the films Gakko and Where is the moon? .

At the Japanese Professional Movie Awards , Toshihiro Tenma received the Directing Award and Aya Kokumai the Young Actor Award. Tenma was honored for Best Directing Debut at the Yokohama Film Festival .
