Geetam Tiwari

Geetam Tiwari is an Indian engineer and university professor. In 2012 she received an honorary doctorate from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. She has extensive research experience in dealing with transportation issues of particular relevance to low-income countries. This includes the development of systems and constructions that make traffic more efficient, safer and more environmentally friendly, with a focus on vulnerable road users and commuters.

life and work

Tiwari studied architecture at the then University of Roorkee (currently Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee ) in Uttarakhand with a bachelor's degree in 1980 and worked for a year as an assistant architect at the Uttar Pradesh State Construction Corporation in Lucknow . Afterwards she attended the School of Urban Planning and Policy at the University of Illinois in Chicago , where she in 1984 a master's degree in transportation planning and transport policy acquired and a PhD in Public Policy Analysis (traffic planning) 1987th After working as a visiting professor at the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi and as a consultant, she joined the Applied Systems Research Program in 1990 as Senior Scientific Officer, later known as the Transport Research and Injury Prevention Program (TRIPP). Since 1990 she has been teaching transport planning and modeling, traffic engineering, geometric design of highways and traffic economics at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi. She is involved in interdisciplinary research, including road safety and public transport systems, and has been a member of the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Program at IIT Delhi since 1997. From 2007 to 2010 she was an Adlerbertska visiting professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden . Her work has been supported by the Volvo Research and Education Foundations, the International Association of Traffic Safety Sciences, Japan , the European Union, and the National Institute of Health, USA. She worked with Cambridge University , the University of Chicago , the University of Cape Town and IFSTTAR in France. She has authored several books in the field of urban transportation systems, road safety, and injury prevention. She has published over 100 publications in specialist journals and co-edited four books on traffic planning and safety. Since 2009 she has been editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion. She and her research group have contributed to deepening knowledge of the urban traffic patterns of different vehicles, the effects on public health in the urban environment and the relationship between urban infrastructure and traffic safety. Her research has led to concrete measures such as guidelines for the design of highways and roads in urban environments and the introduction of a rapid bus transport system in Delhi.
