Voves prison camp

The Voves camp (French: camp de Voves ) near Chartres ( Département Eure-et-Loir , France ) was at times a French internment camp (also: Center de séjour surveillé de Voves), which ran from January 5, 1942 to May 9, 1944 was used.

history

The internment camp arose from Frontstalag No. 202 after it was no longer needed by the German military. The eponymous municipality of Voves is located 22 km southeast of Chartres and 50 km from Orléans . At that time, the French authorities were looking for a way to relocate the Aincourt camp ( Val-d'Oise ), where active Communists from Paris had been held since October 1940 . In addition, prisoners from Rouillé (Vienne), Écrouves (Meurthe-et-Moselle), Gaillon (Eure), Châteaubriant and Pithiviers were transported here.

When it was on 5./6. On May 1st, 1944, 42 prisoners escaped through a tunnel, the Schutzstaffel (SS) took over the management of the camp. The remaining 406 prisoners were then transported by the SS via Compiègne ( Royallieu concentration camp ) to Neuengamme concentration camp . Only a few survivors came back after the war.

After 1944

After the liberation of France, an American prisoner of war camp for German soldiers was set up here. The camp with the designation PG 502 existed from September 1944 to April 1947.

Memorial site

Today the camp is preserved as a place of remembrance by a Comité du souvenir . There is a barrack, a memorial , a historic railroad car and an arboretum . Every year in May, a memorial ceremony is held at the site of the former camp.
