Poultry pirochetosis

The Geflügelspirochätose is a septicemic disease of poultry caused by the bacterium Borrelia anserina is caused that the Borrelia belongs. Chickens , turkeys , ducks and geese are susceptible . It is transmitted by ticks , especially Argas persicus . The disease occurs mainly in tropical and subtropical areas; but there have also been isolated cases in Central Europe .

clinic

In a peracute course, the animals die without any previous symptoms of the disease.

In the acute clinical picture, fever , emaciation and drowsiness occur. The mortality is very high.

In the chronic course, diarrhea and lameness predominate.

diagnosis

The bacteriological diagnosis is made through a microscopic blood test. The pathogens can also be detected in organs.

therapy

Of the antibiotics , penicillins are effective. A vaccine is possible. Combating ticks should also be considered.
